He signed up with the Marines in Red Bank, NJ in June, 1970 right after graduation. I  have a picture of him and his Platoon from Camp Lejuene. Clark, Randy  "Red C"   bobbiekayc@wmconnect.com  My name is Randy Clark. I am looking for anyone that was assigned to 41st
Port Construction out of Long Binh during Nov 68 through Oct 70. I was from Ohio and was known as 'Red C’ because there were two of us with red hair and he was called ‘Red whatever his initial was’. I lived on the 1st platoon pile-driving barge and was a lead climber. I am trying to find anyone who knew me or served on that boat.
If anyone has any pictures of our company flag, emblem, etc, or any pictures of the unit please contact me. (mailto:bobbiekayc@wmconnect.com)I’m especially interested in knowing if anyone can remember the hill across the highway from our company area at Long Binh that the VC had tunneled into and from which they attacked the perimeter “one night”. After a night of fierce fighting that included big guns, Cobras, napalm, bombers and fire from the perimeter, by morning the hill was gone. We were told later that there were 200-300 VC in that hill. Does anyone remember the stench for months after that attack? If so, do you remember when this occurred or have any pictures of it?
Also, does anyone remember the crane tipping over with two men on the leads? One came up and one didn’t. Again, any dates or pictures? Does anyone remember the crane operator unloading too many I-beams from the left side of the supply barge and it flipped over. If so, can you tell me what you remember (where, when, pictures) and how did we recover it.
If you were on that boat, do you remember the evening we were test firing our 50-cal and tracer went astray and killed a little girl in her hooch? Do you remember what happened after that and what we did and had to do? If so, could you please tell me what you saw, what you heard, what you felt.
Does anyone remember pulling guard duty at night on the boat, shooting anything floating upor down the river (boxes, logs, bodies, whatever) to protect our boat from floating mines or booby-traps. Remember dropping concussion grenades every so often to ward off any submerged swimmers that just might be planning to do us harm (the barge that is).
If anyone has any information about any of the above incidents or has been in contact with any of the other guys please contact me. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN PROVIDE!!  WELCOME HOME BROTHERS!! ’Red C’, Randy Clark , 125 ECrisafulli Rd , MerrittIsland, Fl  32953 .  Phone:  321-453-9554 (home)  321-794-9723 (cell) Email:  bobbiekayc@wmconnect.com

Dansberry, Arthur  m_mcconnaghy@hotmail.com    In reference to my grandfather Arthur Dansberry (orig. of WI, in ret. W.NY)   in the Buddy Links webpage I saw today, he passed in Nov. of '01.  He had a guard at his funeral, where they honored his service.  All the years I knew him growing up, the years he spent in the service are not something he talked about very much, unless they where of his time he spent in marksmanship.  I know that he and my uncle who was a marine, shared that common ground.  He would talk about specific things if I asked, but rarely volunteered much.  I've asked my brothers who are older what he may have talked about, but they don't remember.  It was shortly before my grandmother passed in '96 that I even heard about his brother that was a ranger who died in Korea ( I believe he was listed as a pow/mia.)  If you know anything about the units he served with, or the places traveled, I ask you to share that with me.  I seen a few medals, but it's been years since then, and I don't remember them anymore.  Ithink his last wife has them, and she has cut all ties with us now.  I know of Hawaii, a little about his Korea years, and nothing of his Vietnam service.  I have a hand full of pictures from those days, I have a picture of him playing baseball for an MP group, looks like late 50' early 60's in B&W.  If you know of where or how I can get a copy of his service record I'd like to know how to get that.  I have so many relatives who served, that come Memorial Day I try to remember all that they have done.   Regards, Michael McConnaghy

Matson, James (JIM) Thanks a bunch for the reply! TED is my cousin and he very much wants to contact these guys. Seems they were in Tiger Force together. He do got no computer so he ask me to try and make contact in his behalf... I was with the HQ HQ 2nd Bn 18th Inf  1ST DIV. (Big Red One) Recon. We were Westey's gofers, if ya know what I mean. Would love to talk w/ some of the boy's (men) I was with. We ALL started out as BOYS. Some people say I'm full of shit, or nuts but I can only remember one man's name that was there when I was , a Med by the name of Probst! Unfortunately by the time I found him he was 6' under from Cancer.  I guess in a way I am a little crazy but I just can't handle all these guys who blow their whistle and holler about "any thing with slanted eyes is a gook and ought to be shot on the spot". I've found most of them kind to be rear guard troopies. Got two BIG HERO'S here in town:  1) lanyard yanker for a Marine Arty Group.     2) Army Motor Pool Monkey w/ 2 (TWO) Purple Hearts. Seems for the first one he accidentally set a truck on fire and got burnt, the second he was inflating a split ring tire and blew the damn thing up. BOY NOW HE'S A HERO!!!! Sad apart is while he's here bragging about being a HERO and flaunting his Purple Hearts, his brother WAS shipped back in a body bag while trying to do in the boonies what he thought was the right thing to do , and just be a boonie rat like the rest of us. WELL cried enough, and wasted a lot of your computer space. THANKS!!!! If you happen to run into anyone from 2/18/1st Div. Recon 6 of 66 - 6 of 67 Tell Matson said HOWDY!!!! James (JIM) Matson

Maze, David Lee SP4 patmcfad@bright.net  Are there any Army Vets out there that might know what happened to my big brother, David Lee Maze?  The Army had a hard time explaining what happened.  Never received dog tags.  First they reported that my brother was killed in active combat...Then came back and said he was killed by throwing a bayonet at an ammunition shelter.  That one was hard to swallow.  My brother was an expert Mortar man and an excellent marksman.  He was quite familiar with the proper handling of ammunition.  He was reportedly killed on May 28, 1970 somewhere in Cambodia.  He was a great guitarist and even went by the name alias "fingers".  Had a band at home in Pataskala, Ohio called "The AVENJURES".   If anyone out there served with my big brother and might know what really happened, I would love to hear from you...Even if you don't know what happened but served with him over there, I'd still love to know ya!  I'm little sister: Catherine L. (MAZE) McFadden.  patmcfad@bright.net  or 740-493-8026.  Thanks and love to you all !

McEwen, John
jmceweniii@rochester.rr.com  To Whom it may concern, I would like to start by saying thank you for this opportunity to get some help with an issue I have had since I was a child.  I'm not a veteran, but my father was.  He was with the Army in the 25th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.  His name is John McEwen Jr.   Growing up my father hardly talked of the war but had many pictures and many medals.  He also had this  "Death Before Dishonor" tattoo that always sent shivers down my spine whenever I looked at it.  As I grew up he spoke more and more of the friends he lost and bits and pieces he cared to share.  One thing he mentioned repeatedly was a gentleman he served under, a Major named Joe Rigby.  He had his address written in the back of his handbook.  This man was placed higher than any in my father's eyes.  A tremendous leader who wouldn't make his men do anything that he wouldn't.  As time went on I became a man and my father and I didn’t talk as much.  He still had his tattoo and soon so did I.  My father is my biggest hero, and has my greatest respect.  Since life is funny sometimes dad and me are very close again.  He still talks about Major Rigby-who he says probably became a General.  So for my hero I would love to find his. Mr. Rigby’s last home address that I have is: 1813 Moron Street, Austin, Texas 78757.  The last home Address that I have for his wife is: 26 Morrih Avenue, South Anbury, New Jersey, 08879.   If anyone could steer me in the right direction I would be forever indebted.  Thank you to all you soldiers who made my freedom possible.  Yours truly, John McEwen III.

I would love to Here from anyone who served @ the 5th Light on Long Binh Post 67&68 . Do you Remember the flood of "care pkgs.' from " The real world " which came after the Mail clerk of another unit on post, requested mail for his buddys who were not receiving any at Mail call.  He noticed there faces drop each time the last letter was handed out. He wrote a request to a Sunday read Column Writer, who then posted his request in the Magazine section of the Sunday paper. The thing that happened next got me through the rest of my tour. His small mail room would not hold the letters, packages, and love which spilled from the hearts of what I think are the REAL people of the country I love. It took Volunteers, Chaplains, trucks, and many hours to spread the packages to units all over the post and others. Even those of us who did get regular mail were ask to answer as many as we could.  I answered two , one from a teen in Wis. and one from a large farm family in Iowa. It was the real thing I'm telling you, LOVE from America to us at a time when news from state side wasn't usually sounding too good. You know, our unit and all units had some of those guys who needed mail, and, I'd like to thank that mail clerk, that family in Iowa , that teen in Wis., and all of you who loved us even though it was a difficult time.  Spec. 5 David Mitchell 67&68.  May God Bless you all. Obel, Ed  edobel@satx.rr.com B Co, 2d  Battalion 501st Infantry 101st Airborne While serving in Vietnam in March of 1971 I had an experience which I spent 20 years or so trying to forget. Now I would like to find some answers to forgotten memories. I was in Battery C 2d Bn (Ambl) 319th Artillery 101st Airborne Division and was serving as a Forward observer for B Co 2d  Bat 501 Infantry 101st Airborne. On about 28 March 1971 we started a patrol from Firebase Birmingham headed north, about 8 to 10 clicks out we came upon an old NDP. When we stopped to take a break on the NDP we started to receive artillery fire. I immediately called a check fire for all American artillery in the area but the rounds kept coming in. After about 10 minutes the rounds stopped and we were told it was an Arvn (South Vietnam Army) Battery of 105's that had fired on us without asking for American clearance.  We did not have a Medic with the platoon so before leaving the firebase I had picked up a Medic bag so we would have at least some supplies.  I spent about an hour and half performing first aid and starting an IV (with radio instruction) for a badly wounded  infantry sergeant before we got a Medivac  chopper.  My unclear memory tells me he was an E-5 named Don. I believe he had a Polish name and was from Ohio (Sandusky?).  I would like to now if this  man lived or died.  This is the best my memory will allow me. It could be D company, a couple of days either way, or possibly firebase Bastone as the two  were very close and I was on both. Any help would be appreciated.  Please contact Clair Reed per email. CReed68240@AOL.com

Wike, Vernon sfdellwo@hotmail.com Dear Sirs, I did not serve in Vietnam. I never experienced what many of you did, although I have a cousin who served in the Green Berets, as a Medical Specialist, and to this day does not talk about the war. I do have several good friends who I have made over the last couple of years that served in the Marines in Vietnam, one a combat rifle squad leader, and the other a Navy Hospital Corpsman. Dip back in time to 1967.....I was a young high school student, hotly debating the war in Vietnam with my fellows at the time, and all of us wondering if when we graduated, if it would be our turn to be called up. On the front page of the morning paper was a picture that  became seared into my memory. It was a Navy Corpsman, crouched low over a wounded marine, a firefight going on around them. He had been desperately trying to save the life of the other man in the picture. The photo was taken at the exact moment he realized the man was dead.....he looked upwards with a look that to me said it all "Why did he have to die?" Some years later I was in an auto garage and ran across an old issue of LIFE magazine, May 1967, with a photo  of Apollo astronaut Wally Schirra on the cover. Inside, along with the article that had peaked my interest,  Schirra and company recovering the program after the FIRE, was an article about the then-current fighting in Vietnam. The article centered around a marine unit fighting at Hill 881, and the incredible bravery of a young Frenchwoman named Catherine LeRoy, who, according to the article "took the incredible series of photographs on the following page during some of the fiercest fighting to date." Turning the page, I saw the series of photographs from which that one picture I remembered so well from 1967. The article identified the corpsman as Vernon Wike from Prescott, Arizona. Sadly the dead marine was not identified, but his name is no doubt on the Wall. Unfortunately, I was not able to save that magazine, and am still searching for an original issue, mainly for my friend Mike, who thinks he may have gone to Corpsman School with Vernon Wike......both of them served in the same timeframe, and all normally went to the same location for school, so it is likely that their paths crossed. . But the main reason is that I recently read that former Corpsman Vernon Wike survived the war in Vietnam, but is now almost completely disabled, and wheelchair-bound due a mysterious joint-crippling disease triggered, it is thought by the intense heat and humidity of VietNam (Agent Orange??) He was also said to be eking out a meager existence as a maker of saddles and living out of a small trailer. I just think it is disgusting that in a state whose senator is one of our most presently revered Vietnam veterans that another brother vet has been forgotten. I recently decided to go looking for those photographs of Vernon Wike on the Internet, and was not able to find them. I did, however do a name search for the photographer, Catherine LeRoy. I found she has a piece goods store in Paris, France which you can see at www.pieceunique.com and decided to inquire if she were there, and ask about her photographs. Much to my surprise, I received a personal response from Ms. LeRoy saying that there was no link known to her that has those photos, but she did provide the address of Vernon Wike in Prescott, AZ. (I'd rather not publish it here, I'll provide on request.) Perhaps a Veterans Group or former Marines who survived that battle might care to reach out to one of their former docs. Certainly any horseman might consider getting one of his saddles. But more importantly, you can do what I cannot do, not being one of your own...reach out to a brother vet, and help make his life a little better than it is now. I don't know if "Doc" Vernon Wike will ever see what I have written, but coming from someone who didn't see what you saw that day........THANK YOU  for serving.!  Steve Dellwo

TWBA@aol.com  Hello.  I found your web site while searching for material on the Vietnam War.  I'm currently ghostwriting a book on the war and how it affected the families of the men and women who served there.  As you know, much has been written about the soldiers and what they experienced.  But what of their loved ones back home?  The story I'm working on will focus on several families and the battles they faced.  What I'm looking for is anyone -- a mother, a wife, a son, an uncle -- who might be interested in sharing their story.  If you know someone who might  be, feel free to contact me anytime.  I'd be happy to tell you more about  this project.  Regards, Matt Kite, freelance writer/editor  Port Townsend, WA  (360) 379-6650

My name is Laura Speasmaker.  I am heavily involved with the Vietnamese community here in Salt Lake City, Utah.  It began with work within my church & then extended to volunteer activity to where I will now be speaking a translated speech at a meeting for the Free Vietnamese Alliance.  The Vietnamese people captured my heart about 8 years ago.  The stories & the strength that I receive from many of my friends has had a profound impact on my life.
The website that I am involved with is an effort to give something back to the Vietnamese people, to show my love for them & the country.
It deals primarily with the Amerasians left behind both before 1975 as forces pulled out & in 1975 when Saigon finally fell & communications were virtually shut off.
I realize that there are people who may not wish to be found and my effort is not to go out & find people.  My effort is to provide a network of resources to enable those who wish to find one another to find one another.
The website is:  www.zyworld.com/saomaimsa  If you could possibly link back to my website as a resource & tool - I would greatly appreciate it.   Sincerely, Laura Speasmaker

Erniezack@cs.com  My Brother wrote me a poem when he was in Nam. To my  Brother Ernie- I came to this place because there was a job to be done.  Right from the beginning I knew it wouldn't be fun.  I'm here for a year and a year I will stay.  I'LL  fight like hell and I'LL hope and pray my being here will keep my brother way. YOUR   BROTHER  Ed.  Vietnam 1967

forgiveness@buckeye-express.com  Hi,  My name is Kay and I am writing regarding my brother Don.  Let me give you a little background on my brother.  My brother Don was just out of high school when my father died in his arms.  There relationship was little rocky because my brother was a teenager at the time and liked to get into trouble.  Not bad just teenage stuff.  Then he went to war.  My mother and sister tried to get him out because he was the only son of a family with three sister's.  Plus, with a father that just died.  But it did not work.  He went to Vietnam and came home to a mother whom was remarried to a man with four son's and was asked not to come home.  He married his high school sweetheart who was pregnant at the time .  She came with her own set of problems and found it hard to give love and affection.  They do have two children which is pure luck because she hated my brother so.  In all fairness I don't think she always hated my brother but his drinking and war stories and his very brass behavior drove her away more then she already was.  Sometimes my brother would be drinking and call me up and think he was back in Vietnam am and say odd things.  I never called him back the next day because I did not wasn't to embarrass him.  One time at a family get together he was mad at my husband and tried to choke him, another time he was mad at someone and threw him threw a window.  I know he has abused his wife and children years ago.  He is not the best to be around for long lengths of time.  Now finally he has held a job for two years hardly misses a day and does not drink so much.  His heart is good but he is messed up and cannot see it.  Now, why I am writing. His wife whom he has known and been with since he was 14 years of age (they have been married for 30 years) has left him.  He has never has professional help for the war problems now this I am worried.  He  lives in Dearborn Michigan and I would like to know if there is anyone out there who can help him.  He has no money because him and his wife have debts up to 25,000.  He can remodel any house and build anything. His work is great and he loves to do it.  He does not need a job , just a friend who can relate to his problems.  Thanks Kay

Hi, My name is Dorothy McCoy Lamprecht, I am currently working on a dissertation on Vietnam veterans. I have two questions to ask veterans:  Do you believe that Vietnam veterans, as a group, are perceived accurately by the general population? Why?  I would like my dissertation to represent the beliefs of Vietnam veterans, not my beliefs. That has been done enough. In order to do that I need feedback from as many Vietnam veterans as possible. I would appreciate any help you can give to me.  Thank you, Dorothy.

On behalf of Artistic License Films, it is my pleasure to bring the film REGRET TO INFORM to your attention, a work I am sure you and your organization members will be extremely interested in. Nominated for a 1998 Academy Award, Barbara Sonneborn's REGRET TO INFORM is one of the most highly praised documentary films of recent years. On her 24th birthday, Barbara Sonneborn received word that her husband, Jeff, had been killed in Vietnam. Twenty years later, Sonneborn embarks on a journey through the country where he fought and died. Woven into her personal odyssey are interviews with American and Vietnamese widows FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE CONFLICT who speak openly about the men they love and how war changed their lives forever.   Deeply personal yet vastly universal, specific to the Vietnam conflict while reverberating strongly with today's current world crises, REGRET TO INFORM gives human faces to the nameless casualties of war while offering hope for healing and reconciliation as we enter the new millennium.  Honored with the 1999 Sundance Film Festival awards for Best Directing and Best Cinematography, the 1999 Independent Spirit Award, and the 1999 Human Right Watch Festival's Nestor Alemendros Award honoring "courage and commitment in human rights filmmaking," REGRET TO INFORM is a film called "staggering!" by VARIETY, with Robert Ebert declaring REGRET TO INFORM, "deeply affecting. [The film] approaches the war from a different viewpoint than all other Vietnam films."  REGRET TO INFORM opens on Friday, June 25th at the Art Greenwich Theatre (located on the corner of 12th Street and Greenwich Avenue, one block west of Seventh Avenue) and in cities across the country this Fall.  We hope to see you there.
